Kendray Hospital is a specialist care facility proving services for patients with differing degrees of mental health problems including substance abuse and dementia. Ward 6 was a well established self contained unit providing in-patient care for elderly and particularly vulnerable patients.
We actively engaged with the user group and estates staff in order to fully establish the scope of the work required, and what was feasible within the constraints of the existing building footprint. It was clear from the outset that the early involvement of the medical staff would be a key step towards understanding the patient care process, and appreciating exactly what needed to be done.
Subsequently the ward was completely reconfigured to provide 10 individual bedrooms to current care standards, all with en-suite facilities. Patient privacy and dignity was addressed with 2 separate wings for separate male and female occupation, with support accommodation and patient day facilities in a central core. Circulation areas were redesigned to improve wheelchair accessibility, and new assisted bathing facilities were provided. Existing finishes were replaced, and new mechanical and electrical services were installed throughout. All detailing was undertaken to create a complete anti-ligature environment to ensure the safety of the patients.
