The St Judes project is a Futurebuilders England sponsored project and is first and foremost aimed at securing a sustainable long term future for the work that Shield does as a support agency across South Yorkshire for people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. It is a multi phase project to improve and upgrade the existing building and make it accessible to all, providing upgraded training & conference facilities, a Well Being Centre, therapy and counselling and a small fitness gym.
The site lies within a conservation area and detailed consultation with the local planning department was undertaken to consider how the changes and new entrances would fit within the existing street.
The project was in two phases with the design for the refurbishment of the existing spaces first and a new 2 storey extension designed to provide improved access and toilet facilities for the existing building, when funds are available.
The Client undertook to project manage the work themselves and information on their statutory obligations was discussed.
Technical improvements include general upgrading to all existing offices, incorporating improved sound and thermal insulation, low energy lighting and ventilation installations, whilst meeting the requirements of alterations in a conservation area.
